NOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE On the (In)Homogeneity of Reanalysis Products

چکیده

The homogeneity of the ECMWF 40-yr Re-Analysis (ERA-40) is assessed. This is done by comparing ERA40 data with results from the NCEP–NCAR reanalysis and also by investigating a known relationship between a modeled (latent heat flux) and an external (SST) quantity. The direct comparison between the two reanalyses reveals a lot of inhomogeneities. They occur mainly in the Southern Hemisphere and before 1980. While observational density was sufficient to effectively constrain the models in the Northern Hemisphere, it was not in the Southern Hemisphere. From the investigation of the relationship between latent heat flux and SST it is found that, because of an increasing amount of data, the reanalysis results become more reliable toward the end of the reanalysis period (approximately after 1980). When using the reanalysis data to investigate climate change issues care has to be taken not to confuse the inhomogeneities with real changes.

Some notes on the characterization of two dimensional skew cyclic codes

‎‎A natural generalization of two dimensional cyclic code ($T{TDC}$) is two dimensional skew cyclic code‎. ‎It is well-known that there is a correspondence between two dimensional skew cyclic codes and left ideals of the quotient ring $R_n:=F[x,y;rho,theta]/_l$‎. ‎In this paper we characterize the left ideals of the ring $R_n$ with two methods and find the generator matrix for two dimensional s...

NOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE Life Span of Subseasonal Coupled Anomalies

The impact of the local phase relationship between the low-level atmospheric circulation and the sea surface temperature (SST) on the duration of atmospheric anomalies is statistically evaluated. Using 5-day-average data from the NCEP–NCAR reanalysis, it is found that most of the long-lasting atmospheric anomalies are locally coupled with SST anomalies, with their number decreasing from the equ...

NOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE Monthly Climatologies of Oceanic Friction Velocity Cubed

Different measures of wind influence the ocean in different ways. In particular, the time-averaged mixed layer turbulent energy production rate is proportional to !u *", where u* is the “oceanic friction velocity” that is based on wind stress. Estimating !u *" from monthly averages of wind stress or wind speed may introduce large biases due to the day-to-day variability of the direction and mag...

NOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE Evaluation of the NCEP–NCAR and ECMWF 15- and 40-Yr Reanalyses Using Rawinsonde Data from Two Independent Arctic Field Experiments*

Many aspects of reanalysis data are of high quality over regions with sufficiently dense data, but the accuracy is uncertain over areas with sparse observations. NCEP–NCAR reanalysis (NNR) and ECMWF 15/40-Yr Re-Analysis (ERA-15 and ERA-40) variables are compared to two independent rawinsonde datasets from the periphery of the Arctic Ocean during the late 1980s and early 1990s: the Coordinated E...
